Sussex REC members should be aware of fraudulent advertising by a solar company targeting homeowners in Sussex REC's territory. This company, "Here Comes The Solar," is advertising on Facebook promising Sussex REC members free installation of solar panels and batteries, and a lower monthly rate on their electric bills.
The state program they claim would cover this installation is, in reality, only available to customers of investor-owned utilities who pay an extra fee on their bills for the BPU's clean energy programs. Sussex REC is not governed by the BPU, so our members do not pay into this fund and can't access its programs. Here Comes The Solar is aware of this, as their representatives keep a list of utilities they can work with which does not include Sussex REC. Despite this, they are still targeting our members in their advertising!
Utility and solar scams are becoming more common, and we encourage members to stay vigilant of deals that seem too good to be true. While we cannot say whether or not their entire service is a scam, this ad is false advertising as the company knowingly promises free installation to NJ residents who are not eligible for the BPU's program. If you see this ad pop up in your Facebook feed, you can report it as a misleading or fraudulent service.
